3 WAYS YOUR AIRCONDITION IS KILLING YOU SLOWLY

Whether you're working, or in school, you have some level of exposure to air conditioned rooms in one way or another. You work or study in air conditioned offices, classrooms and libraries, and when you close you jump into your fully AC car/Uber. Some even have it in their houses! For you thinking, well I don't have a car etc, don't forget that the receptions, banks, companies, hotels, salons, restaurants, bars etc we go to, are no different. At some point in time, you're likely to be at the mercy of full blown AC.

With our incredibly hot weather, I wouldn't blame us too much, because AC can really be a saviour when you've just had it with the blazing heat and you need to cool down. Despite the fact that they give you much needed relief from the scorching heat, ACs are not be the best option for our health when it comes to cooling off, and it is in a way killing you slowly. Here's how;

1. PROBLEMS WITH BREATHING.

 The cold dry air from ACs can dry up the mucous membranes in your nose and throat and make breathing difficult, and cause you to have irritation. AC is also  associated with chronic rhinitis, pharyngitis, throat irritation and hoarseness. It can also worsen eye conditions like conjunctivitis and blepharitis.
Also, when ACs are not cleaned and maintained thoroughly and the filters are not changed regularly, they become a perfect breeding ground for all kinds of bacteria and fungi, as moisture can build up in the ducts of the AC from condensation when the cool air passes through.

These microorganisms are released into the air, and breathing them in leads to a myriad of breathing problems, and respiratory diseases.

2. UNEXPLAINED ILLHEALTH AND FATIGUE;

 A lot of people realize that, after spending the whole day in AC, they often feel more tired than usual, they have headaches and a general sense of not being well. They also find that the moment they leave office and into the fresh air, the symptoms often resolve completely. Have you ever experienced that?
Well In a study published in the Aug. 19, 2004 International Journal of Epidemiology, it was found that people working in office buildings with central AC had more symptoms of illness than those who did not work in buildings with central air.

Now you know the likely reason behind that headache and nausea you feel after spending an entire day in a fully AC office.

3. ENVIRONMENTAL CONTAMINATION
Environmental Protection Agencies warn us that we may be more exposed to pollution inside rather than outside! This is especially because central AC does not bring in fresh air but rather circulates the old air in the room.
This means that if there is mold, dust, animal waste or any viruses or air-borne infections going around, you are more likely to have many individuals in that space get exposed to it because it's the same air going backwards and forwards. It could cause an outbreak of disease in that particular space which may have devastating effects on the people there.

Lets take note of these potential AC hazards and protect ourselves accordingly by taking little measures here and there to reduce the amount of time we spend in AC, and get more fresh air time. Eg. if you're working in an AC Office you can step out for a walk during your break etc to get some fresh air. You can also roll down your windows sometimes when driving, for some fresh air.
